Feliway is an indoor area spray that mimics naturally occurring pheromones in order to control urine marking and scratching. You've probably seen a cat rub his face on objects around the house - or even you. What your cat is doing is leaving invisble "it's safe here" markings with facial pheremones. These pheromones tell your cat (and other cats) which areas are safe and help make the cat feel calm and secure within their environment. By mimicing these natural face pheromones, feliway creates a comforting, reassuring environment for your cat and reduces the impulse to urine mark or scratch. Note: Because the causes of feline marking and urination are varied and unpredictable, we regret that Feliway products are not returnable.
How to use:
Feliway Pheromone Spray should be sprayed directly onto the places soiled by urine and also on prominent objects that could be attractive to the cat such as drapes, door, or walls. A single dose (one depression of the nozzle) of Feliway Spray should be applied daily at about 10cm (4 in.) from the site or urine marking, keeping the bottle vertical. The Feliway Spray should be applied at a height of about 20cm (8 in.) from the floor.
Maintenance treatment of each urine marking location is recommended every three days (or twice weekly), unless the initiating cause for the cat’s anxiety/ marking behavior has been removed. After the cat is observed rubbing the site with its head, marking it with it’s own facial pheromones, treatment with Feliway Spray should be continued for 1 month.
- Sexually excited cats: When a male cat is marking in response to the presence of a female in heat (this is usually accompanied by continual calling), it is not necessary to use a pheromone product (such as FELIWAY Cat Calming Pheromone Spray) on all prominent objects that could be attractive to the cat. In this case, it is usually sufficient to apply FELIWAY Cat Calming Pheromone Spray only to the places marked, which are usually near doors and windows. Alternately, one can use a wide area pheromone diffuser, such as the Feliway – Feline stress diffuser kit.
- Multiple cat households: The risk of urine marking is greater when several cats are present in a household. The application of a pheromone product (such as FELIWAY Cat Calming Pheromone Spray), such as should be increased to two or three times per day on marked sites and once-a-day on prominent objects that could be attractive to the cats. Alternately, one can use a wide area pheromone diffuser, such as the Feliway – Feline stress diffuser kit.
- Elderly cats: With elderly cats, Feliway Pheromone products may need to be used for 45 days in the manner described for multiple cat households, then once every 2-3 days for as long as necessary.
