| The putrid odor we commonly associate with urine is actually ammonia vapor and other gaseous waste by-products of bacteria feeding on animal proteins present in the urine. In large quantities, the ammonia vapors from pet urine can become so strong that cleanup crews must wear a portable breathing apparatus just to breathe. In a normal house, it never gets that bad but it certainly is not healthy. Particularly for children, the elderly, and people with breathing problems like asthma.
